Surge the Tenrec is a relatively new addition to the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, first introduced in the IDW Sonic Comics. 

 

Created as a rival to Sonic, she quickly stood out for her electrifying powers, punk-inspired design, and intricate backstory.

 

In this post, we’ll go over some of the more common questions fans have about Surge, including her first appearance, powers, age, and more.

How Old Is Surge The Tenrec?

Surge’s exact age has never been revealed in the comics or official material.

 

However, based on her role and personality, most fans assume she is a teenager, likely close in age to Sonic (15 years old) or Amy (12 years old).

 

Until SEGA or IDW confirm otherwise, her age remains speculative, but it’s fair to say that it’s around that range.

How Tall Is Surge The Tenrec?

Surge has never had an officially confirmed height, so all we can do is speculate and compare to other characters.

 

By comparing her comic appearances with Sonic, she appears to be around Sonic’s height, slightly shorter (about 3 feet / ~90 cm tall).

What Was Surge The Tenrec's First Appearance

Because Surge is a character created from the IDW comics, her first appearance is thus, in the IDW comics.

 

The first actual mention of both Surge the Tenrec, and Kit the Fennec, is in the IDW issue #46, paving the way for her actual introduction to the series, in the later issues.

 

Her first proper introduction, is in the Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #1, issue released in November 2021 in between issue #47 and #48.

Surge The Tenrec Powers

Surge’s abilities come from cybernetic enhancements that fused her with the abilities of different characters and even elements of the Metal Virus.

Her main powers and abilities include:

  • Electrokinesis – generating and controlling electricity.

  • Super Speed – engineered to match Sonic’s speed.

  • Enhanced Strength & Durability – able to withstand powerful impacts.

  • Spin Attack & Spin Dash – traditional Sonic-style techniques with added electrical charge.

  • Overcharge – an ultimate ability that unleashes massive electrical energy against multiple opponents.

Is Surge The Tenrec A Girl?

Yes, Surge the Tenrec is a female.

 

She is consistently referred to as “she/her” in both the comics and official materials.

Who Made Surge The Tenrec?

In-universe, Surge was created by Dr. Starline using cybernetic enhancements and genetic data from other characters and traces of the metal virus.

 

She was given artificial memories and hypnotic conditioning to ensure her loyalty, although she would eventually break free of Starline’s control.

Who Designed Surge The Tenrec?

Her design was led by Evan Stanley (writer/artist for IDW), with contributions from artist Mauro Fonseca. 

 

According to writer Ian Flynn, Surge was inspired by the infamous Ashura glitch from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as well as Japanese punk fashion and anime influences like Android 18 (Dragon Ball Z).
