Who is surge The Tenrec?

Surge the Tenrec is an anthropomorphic tenrec introduced in IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comics, created and cybernetically enhanced by Dr. Starline to serve as a dark mirror of Sonic himself.

Lacking any memories of her past, she was programmed to destroy Sonic and supplant him as the world’s hero.

Possessing superhuman speed and crackling electric abilities, Surge is driven by the trauma of Starline’s experiments.

After uncovering the truth of her origin, she turns that rage toward anyone responsible for stripping away her past, making her one of Sonic’s fiercest rivals in the comic series

frequently asked questions

Surge hasn't been around for too long, but still, people have tons of questions about her.

Here are some "power‑packed" responses to just some of the most common questions asked about her.

Let's take a look.

What Are The Origins Of Surge?
It is rumored, that Surge originally came to be, based on one of Sonic fandom’s most iconic palette‑swap glitches (often called “Ashura Glitch”).

By enabling Debug mode in Emerald Hill Zone in Sonic 2 for the Sega, and using waterfall tiles, you could overload the console’s sprite attribute table and misload the palette data, turning Sonic into an eerie shade of green and black version of himself.
Surge the Tenrec actually makes her debut in Sonic the Hedgehog #46 (October 2021), where Dr. Starline’s cybernetic experiment is first unleashed in the main IDW series.

She then takes center stage as one of the titular foes in the Impostor Syndrome miniseries (November 2021) alongside her “partner in crime” Kitsunami (Kit) the Fennec.

She’s become a recurring force in IDW’s Sonic comics, popping up consistently after her debut, drives the “Overpowered” arc across issues #52–#56 and even sports a new Riders‑style look in issue #69, proving she’s far more than a one‑off villain.

Her exact age isn’t specified in the IDW comics, but she’s portrayed as a young adult tenrec.

We’d say she’s around Sonics’ in-game age, maybe a bit younger.

Not exactly. She was infused with Sonic’s speed data to mirror his abilities, but her species, personality, and electrokinetic twists make her entirely her own.

Surge the Tenrec was introduced as a 100% full-fledged villain in the comics.

After uncovering the truth of her past and the fact that her memories were stolen, Surge’s drive for revenge against those who manipulated her, blurs the line into anti‑hero territory, making her motivations far more “conflicted”, than just purely evil.

Surge started getting some traction with the fans ever since her first appearance, and (as per usual) Sonic fans wasted no time and asked no permission to start creating their own stuff!
